The core middle school partner for 2005-2006 was John Muir Middle School (JMMS) - a vital learning environment located in South Los Angeles. During the year, JMMS made a substantive commitment to partnering with Arts Bridge that by welcoming four ArtsBridge Scholars and partnering them with talented teachers in art, science, language, and drama. JMMS was particularly interested in linking their ArtdBridge collaboration to college preparedness. In addition to teaching the arts standards to teens at Muir, ArtsBridge has focused on inspiring the youth to imagine and pursue higher education, or career opportunities, in a field of their choice. Drama and English teacher Sheila Diaz explains, “I want all of my students to have access to the arts and … ArtsBridge provides them with a role model who is in college and studying the arts.”
Specifically, Joyce Lin (Art) partnered with Che Edoga (Cal Arts Alumna) by connecting the study of science and robotics to the art of photography. Tatiana Johnson (WAC) taught a Spoken Word and Dance curriculum while working closely with Language Arts and Drama teacher Sheila Diaz and her classroom. Visual Art was taught by Karen Huang (Art History) in partnership with Alix Fournier’s (UCLA Art Alumna) classroom of teenage artists. Cynthia Wennstrom (Art) taught a painting and drawing curriculum with classroom teacher Tammy Jesse and her students.
